We have urgent prayer requests for some of the kids, please be praying for them.
Moriah Centre History
The Moriah Centre started as a feeding scheme for orphans under a tree. The programs are supervised by The Big Bend Christian Fellowship in 2001.
By 2005 there were two age groups of orphans ranging from five to 16 years of age. The dedicated teachers taught basic math, writing, English, and Siswati. In December all the children were invited to take the entrance test for a local government school. All the children passed and were accepted to start in January 2006 under the Government Grant Scheme.
Pre-School
The Centre is running a pre-school of 40 children. We have three teachers, they instruct the children who are divided into three age groups.
Changes at the Center
Moriah Centre is changing its curriculum and has decided to teach the ACE (Accelerated Christian Education) curriculum starting in 2009 school year. There is a cost involved to use their materials. The plan is to add a new grade each year, as the present kids advance, from K6 to eventually go thru to K12. Almost 50% of the kids in Swaziland are not attending school. So Moriah Centre will become a Mission School. This will require several items to be fulfilled. One, more classrooms will be necessary. Two, the cost for each child will increase and so we are making available a portfolio of each child and the cost to support one child for one year of school. More information will be forth coming in the next few weeks. Please keep this in your prayers!
Update to Accelerated Christian Education 11/18/2008
Swaziland Ministry of Education has approved the ACE Curriculum for Swaziland. The Regional Educational Officers have been instructed to help as much as they possibly can to help set up these ACE schools. This is really amazing as the application was only handed in about three months ago. These issues can take years to be passed. God is so good.
See our 2009, 3rd and 4th. Quarter News Letter for more information on changes at the CentreFeeding Program
The Centre now feeds over 100 children each day. The kids are given three "meals" during their morning with us. When they arrive they receive a mug of a nutritious drink called "Morevite." At 10:00 am they receive a peanut butter sandwich with a cup of juice. Finally around 12:30, the orphans are given a bowl of pap--which is a thick porridge made from maize meal and Morivte which is a high protien powder-- and bean or vegetable stew.
Gardens
During the cooler winter months, the teachers and children grow vegetables. The summer months are too hot to grow anything.
Medical
The Centre tries to help the children and their families with their medical needs. Financial assistance is usually the best way. Many families don't even have enough money to get to the Good Shepherd Hospital in Siteki. Good Shepherd is the closest Government hospital to Big Bend. The bus fare is often more expensive than the medical treatment.
